Our team was invited to join and contribute to a research study on next generation online platforms for supply chains. The study was initiated by the European Commission and carried out by two research centres, PPMI (Lithuania) and TNO (Netherlands), with the aim to explore the potential of online platforms acting as enablers of resilience of industrial supply chains and future economic power in Europe.

On 14th December 2023, the European Commission, PPMI and TNO hosted the event “NextGen Online Platforms: Foresight Session on B2B Supply Chains” in Brussels. The event brought together a small team of policy makers, platform experts and practitioners, to discuss the challenges and opportunities of online platforms for supply chains of the future. The discussion was organised around four “futures” used as narrative tools, describing possible economic, geopolitical and cybersecurity technology conditions as of 2035. The four “futures” included:

  • Winner Takes It All: a “future” characterised by a high degree of geopolitical tensions and a low risk of cybercrimes
  • Island Fortress: a “future” characterised by a high degree of geopolitical tensions and a high cybercrime threat
  • Laissez-faire: a “future” characterised by a low degree of geopolitical tensions and a low risk of cybercrimes
  • Online Village: a “future” characterised by a low degree of geopolitical tensions and a high cybercrime threat

The results of this study will be published in 2024. For more details, please visit the PPMI webpage
